Vets fulfil lifetime ambition by opening own practice

Two vets have grabbed the opportunity to capitalise on growing local demand by opening their own practice together, with the support of a £130,000 loan from Lloyds Bank.

Selina Walters and Phillipa Hunt recognised that new residential developments in Chippenham, Wiltshire would mean more family pets needing care, offering them the chance to fulfil their ambition of owning their own practice.

The business partners, who together have more than 30 years of veterinary experience, have now opened the doors at Chalkland Vets, a state-of-the-art practice with two consulting rooms in the heart of the town.

Backing ambition, creating jobs

The loan was used to fund the deposit for a 1,955 square foot property, as well as x-ray, ultrasound, surgical and laboratory equipment.

The practice also has a dental suite, operating theatre, isolation facility, imaging suite and 12 car parking spaces for its clients.

The business is projected to generate revenues of £320,000 in its first year and to grow its workforce from five to seven in the next 12 months.

"We saw a gap in the market here, and when a property became available we knew it was the right decision to take the plunge."

Selina Walters said: "I grew up on a farm and have always loved animals, and it has been a lifelong aspiration of mine to open and own my very own veterinary practice.

"Lloyds Bank has been by our side the whole way, right through from gaining permission to turn the property into a veterinary practice and kitting it out with equipment, to opening our doors to the public. We now look forward to bringing our services to the Chippenham community."

"The business is bringing a valued and much needed service to the fast-growing local area."
