Upgrade and extension to launch Shinwell Medical Centre

An upgrade and extension programme, fuelled by a £1.4 million loan from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, will bring two medical practices into one enhanced premises.

Shinwell Medical Centre, a well-established practice in Horden, County Durham, has channelled investment into a renovation programme designed to increase capacity and improve surroundings for both patients and staff. With lending support from Lloyds Bank, the project also includes an extension to the premises which houses the Horden Group Practice, relocated from its previous site.

The new Shinwell Medical Centre building continues to allow both practices to operate independently. The redevelopment means the number of patients the premises is able to serve increased by 7,000, bringing the combined patient list to 14,000.

New, modern setting

The investment is a significant step forward, says Joseph Chandy, Practice Manager and Partner at Shinwell Medical Centre. “The redevelopment of the practice enabled us to create a welcoming environment for our patients and allows us to accommodate the Horden Group Practice. Patients and staff have been using outdated facilities, so we’re pleased to be able to provide a new and modern setting for both practices.”

The redeveloped premises also features a training centre for junior doctors looking to pursue a career in general practice, he adds. “The training space plays an important role in equipping the next generation of GPs with the skills needed to provide the patient population with the highest quality care. A healthy relationship

The loan from Lloyds Bank is the latest deal in what has been a long-standing relationship with the Chandy family, who own and manage the Shinwell Medical Centre. The Bank originally funded the family’s development of a nursing home in the late 1980s, in addition to supporting the launch of the original Shinwell Medical Centre.

“The Chandy family are committed to ensuring that communities across the county have access to high-quality healthcare services, and we’re pleased to have been able to support the family over two generations as they’ve worked to achieve their goals,” notes Malcolm Swan, Senior Healthcare Banking Consultant at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.
